What is Photoaging?

There are two major categories of human skin aging:

1. Normal Aging

The cause of normal aging skin is no other than the natural decline in our bodily functions that we experience when we age.

Our skin loses some of its integrity as we age. This is inevitable, and it will gradually come no matter how much we take care of our skin. As we age, the skin changes in appearance. 2. Photoaging

Photo aging is characterized by early onset of signs of aging caused by frequent exposure to the sun. This damage is not exclusive to sun exposure though. Getting exposed to other UV sources can also add to the skin damage.

Photo aged skin is characterized by a generalized growth and thickening of skin overtime. This is directly opposite of biological aging skin. Patients with this type of skin will have enlarged glands, skin cancers, thickening skin, visible blood vessels, sunspots, deep wrinkling, and other pigmentary changes.


The Characteristics of Photoaging

Both endogenous and exogenous skin aging processes affect the quantity and quality of collagen fibers and elastic fibers in the skin.

Normal aging skin becomes thinner, and the epidermis junctions are flattened, resulting in decreased adhesion between the epidermis and the elastic fibers becomes thinner, and reduce in quantity.
